Cromer Pier in need of £250,000 “high priority” repairs

North Norfolk District Council has confirmed that Cromer Pier requires a series of “high priority” repairs, with the urgent work to shore up beams and trusses beginning next year.

The warning comes after the most recent structural survey of the Grade II-listed pier found numerous areas of storm damage which could cost up to £250,000 to remedy.

“NNDC estimates it will cost at least £250,000 to repair the ‘high priority’ issues but more money could be needed for less urgent works in the future,” reported the Eastern Daily Press. “Engineers could begin tackling the structural defects by next month, if the work is approved.”

“Officials hope to begin the repairs as soon as possible to ‘capitalise’ on the quiet period in January and February, with no shows planned at the theatre and lower footfall expected during the winter months.”

In a report to the council, officers noted the absence of programmed shows in the Pavilion Theatre presented “a window of opportunity to undertake intrusive remedial works with minimal disruption to visitors, performers, and the wider pier operations.”

Councillors met in March to green light a £2m investment and modernisation project at the pier, however it is likely the £250,000 estimate for repairs will be in addition to the funding package.
