A world champion is driving a campaign to bring Fleetwood Pier back to glory with a plan to turn it into a must visit attraction. Will boxing champ Jane Couch land the sucker punch?
Former world boxing champion Jane Couch MBE is leading a campaign to restore Fleetwood Pier 17 years after the attraction was destroyed in a fire, telling reporters “if we bring people together I’m sure we can make things happen.”
Couch, who first took the WIBF light welterweight title in 1996, has enlisted the help of supporters such as the former mayor of Wyre, and will hold a planning meeting to discuss the future of the empty pier site early next month.
“When Fleetwood had its pier it attracted people from outside the town and they’d spend time and money here,” said Couch. “We really need some more positive things to happen to Fleetwood and this would bring people onto the seafront and make use of that empty space.
“There’s a long way to go and discussions to be had, but if we bring people together I’m sure we can make things happen.”
Jane Preston, who was Mayor of Wyre between 2024 and 2025, said: “It won’t be a straightforward process, because there are a few things to discuss, but it will be good to get the right people around the table and see where we can go.”
“Lorriane Beavers, the MP for Fleetwood, is interested in being there and with some positive ideas, we could really take things forward.”
