Funstation’s Head of Marketing & Customer Experience, Chris Alexander, will be taking on the London Landmarks Half Marathon on 12 April to raise money for Rays of Sunshine. Ahead of his “amazing feat”, Coinslot listens in as Rays of Sunshine sat down with him to ask some questions.
What motivated you to sign up to the London Landmarks Half Marathon?
Chris Alexander: The children and families associated with Rays of Sunshine has been my motivation! I feel like if I can haul myself around London for 21+ km and raise some funds for this amazing organisation and amazing children, then I absolutely should!
Having met some of the families and the children that Rays of Sunshine works with, I am incredibly inspired and want to do as much as I can.
Why are you supporting Rays of Sunshine?
Chris Alexander: At Funstation we have supported Rays of Sunshine for a long time now on various initiatives, and as mentioned, I have been lucky enough to have met some of the amazing families and children involved.
Through my role as Head of Marketing, we have worked together on numerous events and that has developed a real sense of personal attachment to Rays of Sunshine. I am immensely proud to be involved in this, and I can’t wait to get to the race day!
Are you a runner usually? Or is this a whole new challenge?
Chris Alexander: I wouldn’t say I am a runner… I have played football throughout my life and a keen gym goer but long-distance running is something I have never been good at and find a challenge.
That said, this is why I want to achieve this for Rays of Sunshine, as it symbolises in a very small way the very real challenges that others face on a day-to-day basis.
How have you been finding training?
Chris Alexander: Difficult! It’s a fair distance to be training for and it takes discipline and commitment, but I am really enjoying it and I think the reasoning behind doing it is making it all worthwhile!
Have you found any tips/tricks/hacks to make running easier?
Chris Alexander: Yes absolutely! When I got started with this I thought, I just need to keep running but that doesn’t really work.
Focusing on strength work, core workouts and also shorter, faster runs massively improves the longer harder runs. Don’t skip the gym work!
What do you think will keep you going if the course gets tough on the big day?
Chris Alexander: As mentioned the inspiration and admiration of the children and their families that are associated with Rays of Sunshine will be at the forefront of my mind during the run and I know that will get me through!
Do you have any words of encouragement to anyone umming and ahhing about signing up to their own Rays of Sunshine fundraiser?
Chris Alexander: You won’t regret it! A fantastic organisation for an incredible cause that helps spread some much needed joy and happiness, what more could you ask for?
And Rays of Sunshine are supporting Alexander all the way:
Nicola Aquila, Head of Fundraising for Rays of Sunshine: Chris and Funstation have been dedicated supporters of Rays of Sunshine for many years, and have helped us put smiles on the faces of countless seriously ill children and families. We are so grateful to him for taking on this new challenge and can’t wait to cheer him over the finish line on the big day!”
