J Holland and Sons submit plans for new Weymouth bingo hall

J Holland and Sons has submitted plans to Dorset Council to open a new bingo hall in Weymouth, converting a former Boots store on St Mary Street into the latest venue in its Trident Casino estate.

Proposals for the change of use have already been seen by Weymouth Town Council, with planners moving to support the conversion in order to reduce the number of vacant town centre units. However, the final decision will be made by county councillors.

“The Boots unit has been empty since June 2022 and according to documents, the applicant intends to invest in the region of £200,000 to transform the premises,” reported the Dorset Echo. “In addition it will create four new full-time jobs and two part-time jobs for the local community. The premises would be open from 10am-10pm daily.”

A spokesperson for J Holland and Sons added: “High street bingo has grown in popularity over the past several years and we would like to add this to Weymouth’s leisure offering.”

Commenting on behalf of Weymouth Town Council, councillor Jon Orrell said: “I will support it… It’s probably a change of town centre, we are moving away from retail and necessarily, lots of towns that haven’t adapted end up as ghost towns.”
