Middle East conflict throws IAAPA Abu Dhabi into doubt

Doubts have been raised by UK executives over the likelihood of the inaugural IAAPA Middle East taking place in Abu Dhabi later this month, following the escalation of violence in the region.

The event is scheduled to begin on 31 March, with many manufacturers and suppliers already having shipped their products to the country, however travel restrictions could make attendance impossible.

UDC’s Mark Horwood told Intergame: “I think the organisers have a little time before making a final decision but I have no idea what they will decide. UDC is prepared for the IAAPA Middle East Exhibition; our equipment for the booth is already in the UAE and our team is ready. Our plan is to carry on as normal until told otherwise.”

“It would be better to cancel it rather than postpone it until later in the year – there are many shows set for later in the year already.”

At Sega Amusements, Justin Burke said: “Thankfully we and ASI had good levels of product shipped prior to the DEAL show. In the meantime we just wish for our friends and partners in that region to remain safe as a priority.”

“I think it’s very difficult to see it going ahead,” LAI Games’ international sales manager Steve Bryant. “Although LAI Games, through our exclusive distributor ASI, has product already close by in Dubai, there will be many who still have shipments inbound that are likely to be severely delayed.”

“Travel is of course a key factor, where even if flights are permitted, will exhibitors and potential attendees feel safe to fly?”
