A recent survey from car maker Vauxhall has found that more than two thirds of the 2,000 people surveyed plan to take a holiday in the UK this year, with 50 percent opting to remain on familiar shores due to travel disruption caused by conflict in the Middle East. Has the President of the United States offered the UK tourist sector a staycation trump card?
Car maker Vauxhall has released a survey that reveals more than two third of UK residents prefer a staycation than a holiday abroad, with 50 percent citing rising travel costs caused by disruption in the Middle East as a key factor in planning their summer break.
The survey comes as VisitEngland predicts a massive rise in domestic tourism this year, with an estimated 12.5 million people planning to holiday in the UK this Easter, up from 10.6 million last year, delivering a £4.8bn boost to the economy.
“The UK is such a wonderful place to holiday, and it’s been great finding out why people love it so much,” said Vauxhall MD Eurig Druce. “Everyone has memories of holidaying in the UK from their childhood, and more than ever, Brits are choosing ‘staycations’ over going abroad, whether that be because of the beautiful scenery on our doorstep or the comfort of travelling in your own car.”
According to the study, 28 percent of respondents said access to the seaside is the best thing about staying in the UK, with 62 percent saying the best type of staycation is a “coastal getaway.”
The south west of England was most popular as a destination, chosen by 21 percent, with 15 percent preferring Scotland, and 11 percent choosing Wales.
Speaking on the expectations for the coming months, VisitEngland CEO Patricia Yates said: “It’s encouraging to see so many of us are planning a holiday at home, with its ease, convenience and certainty of budgeting.”
“We have incredible activities, experiences and places to stay for all tastes and budgets, and there really is nowhere quite like Britain in springtime.”
