Tim Batstone is to scale Everest this May in order to raise money for the Bacta Charitable Trust, with the HB Leisure MD and former president of Bacta travelling to the Himalayas this month to begin the ascent.
The 67-year-old is well known for his feats of endurance, including the first windsurf circumnavigation of Britain which took 70 days, however the infamous mountain represents “one of the toughest challenges on earth.”
“Everest has been on the list for a very long time,” said Batstone. “But it’s not something you can do in a week out of the office; it’s a huge time commitment, so it kept getting pushed back.”
“Determination and willpower are absolutely huge. It’s about endurance: just taking one more step, all the time.”
Batstone signed up to the expedition last year, and has since completed a rigorous examination to test his fitness, technical ability and mental readiness, as well as a 7,000 metre preparatory climb of Aconcagua in the Andes.
“I am definitely one of the oldest people to take this on – I believe the second oldest from the UK and possibly top ten internationally.”
