Britain is losing one pub every single day as McClarkin calls for real tax reforms

Britain’s pub sector faces another challenging year, with 360 venues expected to close permanently in 2026, threatening thousands of jobs and millions in lost tax revenue. The Burnham plan to keep pubs on our high streets is getting tougher by the day …. as one pub falls in the UK every 24 hours.

The British Beer & Pub Association has warned that pubs are closing at a rate of almost one a day, with 295 sites already lost by the end of September and an estimated 5,000 jobs at risk by year-end.

The projected 360 closures would exceed last year’s figure of 336, with more than half of the anticipated job losses affecting under-25s. England has borne the brunt of the downturn, recording 226 closures, including 42 in the south east and 39 in the north west. Scotland has lost 64 pubs, while Wales has seen five closures.

“When a local closes, the damage is felt far and wide,” commented BBPA chief executive Emma McClarkin. “It’s not just workers, communities, our heritage and high streets who lose out when a pub closes, the Treasury loses too.”

The BBPA blamed mounting tax and regulatory pressures, highlighting £322m in additional costs imposed on pubs and brewers by the November 2025 Budget. With each pub contributing approximately £200,000 annually in taxes, the association estimates that this year’s closures could cost the Treasury almost £72m in lost revenue.

While welcoming the Prime Minister’s pledge to cut pub business rates by 20 percent next year, McClarkin called for permanent rates reform, a beer duty freeze, increased draught relief and a review of employment costs.
