Several UK gambling harm charities are yet to receive funding from the statutory levy almost three months after the new system came into force, despite the government indicating payments would begin in April.
The £120m levy, introduced last year, is split between prevention, research and treatment, with the Office for Health Improvement and Disparities responsible for distributing £12m for prevention projects.
According to NEXT.io, some successful applicants have still not received any funding, while others only received payments recently. Sources told the publication the delays had forced some organisations to rely on dwindling reserves, with some staff continuing to work without pay while awaiting funding.
The new system replaced the industry-funded model overseen by GambleAware, but charities have warned the transition has been challenging after reserves were depleted during the changeover. The delays come as some unsuccessful applicants pursue a judicial review of the funding process.
