Eastbourne MP steps up campaign to protect pier

Eastbourne MP Josh Babarinde has renewed calls for action to safeguard Eastbourne Pier, warning that historic pleasure piers face growing financial pressures following concerns over the future of the landmark.

Babarinde launched a campaign after a company linked to the pier’s owners entered liquidation, prompting questions about the long-term future of the attraction. The Liberal Democrat MP has raised the issue in the House of Commons, urging the Government to recognise the challenges facing historic piers and consider emergency measures to help protect them. During Prime Minister’s Questions, Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner acknowledged Eastbourne Pier as a “much-loved, iconic local landmark” and reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to meeting Babarinde to discuss the issue further.

The MP is also seeking additional protections through Asset of Community Value status, which could help safeguard the Victorian attraction in the future. Babarinde said a petition calling for action has already attracted more than 1,500 signatures, demonstrating what he described as the strength of local support for preserving the pier.

He said he would continue exploring “every possible option” to help protect Eastbourne Pier for future generations.
