Clacton Pier is the iconic feature of the Essex seaside coastal resort and every political figure wants a piece of it during the current by-election canvassing. But one party went too far and the Pier, constructed midway through Queen Victoria’s reign, was not amused.
Clacton Pier has “strongly condemned” the actions of right-wing political party British Democrats, after members attempted to ignite pyrotechnics on the historic pier while hanging a banner.
Led by Kai Stephens, a candidate in the upcoming by-election, the group entered the pier without permission on 8 August, before delivering “an unacceptable level of verbal abuse” when confronted by staff.
“Bringing pyrotechnics onto the Pier, with an apparent intention to ignite them, was extremely irresponsible, particularly given the prolonged period of dry weather and the Pier’s timber decking,” said a spokesperson for the pier. “The potential consequences of such actions, including the risk of fire and serious harm to members of the public, are self-evident.”
“Our security team promptly requested that the individuals leave the premises. This request was met with an unacceptable level of verbal abuse and language wholly inappropriate for a family attraction.”
Highlighting the pier’s intention to make the attraction “a place for everyone,” the spokesperson added “we firmly believe that visitors should be able to enjoy their day without disruption, intimidation or interference. We will always take appropriate action to protect the safety and enjoyment of our visitors, staff and the Pier itself.”
