MERKUR introduces Mars Alerts to strengthen player protection

The new Mars Alerts handheld technology is being introduced across MERKUR Slots venues to further strengthen its safer gambling undertakings. Reviewed and endorsed by the world recognised Global Gambling Guidance Group, the smartphone-style device provides venue teams with practical support. An audit trail allows venue managers to confirm the required interactions have been completed within company guidelines.

MERKUR Slots is rolling out new handheld technology across its over-18 UK high street gaming centres to support timely customer interactions and strengthen player protection.

The Mars Alerts system keeps venue teams informed of how long a customer has been playing a machine courtesy of a discreet smartphone-style device that staff can carry with them as they move around the venue.

The technology helps staff undertake observations and direct customer interactions at the appropriate times, in line with company guidelines. It also provides continuity during shift changes, allowing an incoming team member to pick-up the device and seamlessly continue the work of their colleague.

A comprehensive audit trail enables venue managers and area managers to check that required observations and interactions have taken place, strengthening oversight and accountability.

The initiative has been reviewed by G4, the Global Gambling Guidance Group, an international independent audit authority.

Pieter Remmers, Chairman of the Board of G4, stated: “Having reviewed and evaluated the plans for the Mars Player Protection Alert project, I can provide assurance that the development of these alerts will lead to an improvement in player protection for the MERKUR Slots business.”

The rollout comes at a timely moment following publication of the Gambling Commission’s new Gaming Machine Technical Standards. The changes, which are being introduced in stages during 2027 and 2028, include staff alerts and requirements for an appropriate and timely response when relevant play thresholds are reached.

Sascha Blodau, General Manager of MERKUR UK, said: “We have been working on this technology for some time as part of our continuing commitment to safer gambling across all of our venues.

“Mars Alerts provides our venue teams with practical support in carrying out their social responsibility duties. Having the information available on a handheld device helps staff make timely interactions while moving around the venue and ensures continuity when colleagues change shifts.

“Just as importantly, the audit trail allows our managers to confirm the required interactions have been completed within company guidelines. Our aim is to use technology to make our teams more effective and help every customer enjoy their visit safely.”

Mars Alerts forms part of MERKUR’s wider investment in technology to support safer gambling. The business is working with technology providers on further improvements to its venue systems, including the eventual introduction of facial recognition across its venues.
