MERKUR launches Leeds community programme as part of its city-wide support

MERKUR UK has strengthened its commitment to Leeds providing support to two local non-profit groups through its Community scheme. The funding will directly support People Matters’ social enterprise project for learning-disabled adults and Community Empowerment Leeds’ youth music therapy programme.

MERKUR UK, has deepened its relationship with the city of Leeds supporting two prominent not for profit organisations serving the community.

The MERKUR Community scheme, which is a joint initiative between the company and donations from its customers, has awarded its first round of donations to local groups People Matters which supports more than 400 people with learning disabilities and autism each year and Community Empowerment Leeds which provides free music therapy, instrument learning and dance activities for young people aged 11 to 25-years.

The funding will enable People Matters to further the work of its Nourishing People social enterprise project which provides trainees with hands-on experience of producing, packaging and selling snacks, as well as sourcing customers, managing orders and preparing deliveries.

The Amplify Music Therapy programme, run by Community Empowerment Leeds will channel its award to provide a safe and welcoming space where young people can express themselves, build confidence and strengthen wellbeing.

The donations form part of MERKUR’s wider commitment to supporting the communities in which it operates and come as the group grows its presence in Leeds following the summer acquisition of Victoria Gate Casino.

Mark Schertle, Chief Operations Officer at MERKUR, confirmed: “Leeds is an increasingly important city for MERKUR, and our commitment to the area goes beyond just the venues that we operate here. We want to support organisations that are creating real opportunities for local people.

“People Matters and Community Empowerment Leeds both help people grow in confidence, develop skills and look ahead with greater independence. We are proud to back their work.”

Katie Hayes, Head of Operations at People Matters, said: “Nourishing People is about much more than making and selling snacks. It gives our trainees responsibility and practical experience that can make a real difference to their futures.

“These new resources will help trainees work more independently, while the branded aprons that we have purchased will give the team a stronger sense of identity and pride at events. We are incredibly grateful to MERKUR for its support.”

Eresi Muchati, Administrator at Community Empowerment Leeds CIC, said: “Our work gives young people a safe and supportive place to express themselves, grow and make positive choices for the future. MERKUR’s support will help us continue creating those opportunities for young people across Leeds.”

The MERKUR Community Programme is one of the most extensive in the UK’s gaming entertainment sector. Since its launch in 2024, it has donated £423,095.90 supporting over 200 community groups and charities nationwide.

In addition to People Matters and Community Empowerment Leeds, beneficiaries over the past 12-months include Milton Keynes Food Bank, Nova Sports Wheelchair Basketball Club, Rays of Sunshine, Belfast-based Springboard Opportunities, the Motor Neurone Disease Association, Little Lifts, Brain Tumour Research and Momentum, the charity that supports families whose children are living with life-challenging medical conditions.
