The Brenner family of Teignmouth Grand Pier has launched a £250,000 fundraising appeal to support urgent structural repairs following further storm damage.
Four generations of Brenner have operated and maintained the Devon attraction, but said the increasing frequency of storms and loss of protective sand from Teignmouth Beach meant they could “no longer do this alone”.
The GoFundMe campaign has so far raised more than £10,000 from over 340 donations.
Since 2014, the family says it has invested almost £750,000 of its own money into repairs, alongside £800,000 of insurance-funded work following a severe storm that year. However, the pier has been uninsurable for storm damage since 2015.
Recent Storm Ingrid damage included the loss of the end of the pier, while continued exposure to waves is placing pressure on its piles. Funds will be directed towards staged structural repairs, beginning at the shoreward end and working outwards.
Early estimates have previously put comprehensive restoration at around £1m, although the family warned the eventual cost of safeguarding the historic attraction could run into “several million pounds”
