Luxury Leisure are on the expansion trail with a plan to deliver its top quality, multi-regulated, affordable brand of high street entertainment across the UK. And part of that process is to keep re-affirming its commitment to the local social and economic fabric with proactive and positive planning applications. And two more councils have awarded the company a place on the high street in Putney and Wisbech.
Luxury Leisure is to open two new 24-hour AGCs under the Admiral brand this summer, after receiving approval for sites in the London area of Putney and the Cambridgeshire town of Wisbech.
Both applications were given the green light by councillors despite co-ordinated anti-campaigns from some from local residents, as Luxury Leisure continues to expand its presence across UK high streets.
“Wandsworth Council has granted a licence for Luxury Leisure, trading as Admiral, to open a 24-hour adult gaming centre on Putney High Street,” reported MyLondon. “The council’s licensing committee said that while there had been a high number of objections to the application, the ‘threshold for a refusal had not been met’ and its own policy did not contain restrictions based on a clustering of similar venues nearby.”
Acting on behalf of Luxury Leisure, barrister Gary Grant told councillors many of the objections were based on speculative concerns, adding “we know what we’re doing. We know how to operate these venues without in any way undermining the licensing objectives.”
In Wisbech, the proposals to convert a former Halifax bank on the town’s Market Place were also met with pushback from councillors – despite the lack of any credible evidence, however the plans were eventually approved under delegated powers.
In a particularly fiery response, councillor Steve Tierney said “we need to have a close look at how we decide such things in future… and say what brought you to make this stupid decision.”
To bastardise the famed Bill Clinton phrase, it’s the law, stupid.
