The Godden Gaming Organisation has hailed the Chancellor’s decision to remove the 10 percent duty on bingo as “very welcome news” which could have a transformative effect on the sector.
Speaking to BBC South East, the group’s head of communications William Chilcott said the decision announced during the recent Budget represented a “vote of confidence” in the UK bingo industry.
“It was very welcome news for a sector that’s had a couple of difficult years with rising energy costs, employment costs, and a real vote of confidence from this government in our sector,” said Chilcott.
“It’s reflective of the unique community bingo is and how important a role it can play in towns like Hastings.”
The levy will be abolished as of April next year, and Bingo Association CEO Miles Baron highlighted the impact the move will have on boosting the economies of small towns and coastal communities, telling the BBC he was “absolutely delighted.”
“The industry has been trying really hard to reinvent itself since Covid but this will really accelerate the process,” said Baron.
“We’re going to see new clubs, investment in modern premises and we’re going to see more and more bingo clubs.”
