Local MP calls for survey of Hastings Pier ahead of sale

Hastings and Rye MP Helena Dollimore has called on Abid Gulzar to conduct an independent survey of Hastings Pier ahead of putting the attraction on the market, in a bid to ensure the pier remains “a valuable community asset for generations to come.”

Gulzar announced his plans to sell the Grade II-listed landmark last month after seven years at the helm, prompting local community organisation Friends of Hastings Pier to begin preparing an expression of interest for submission to the town council.

“With the recent announcement that Hastings Pier has been put up for sale, I organised a meeting with local councillors and community organisations to discuss how we can work together to protect the pier,” said Dollimore.

“We are all united in our goal of ensuring that the pier is a valuable community asset for generations to come. The first step in that mission is for the current owner of the pier to conduct and publish an independent survey detailing the current condition of the pier.

The pier was registered as an asset of community value in 2019, meaning Hastings Council was informed of the sale ahead of time. Since then, Friends of Hastings Pier has confirmed its intention to bring the pier “back under community control.”
