More than half of UK against introduction of Tourism Tax

UKHospitality has said that a recent survey showing 56 percent of people oppose the Tourism Tax should be a “wake-up call” for the government regarding the controversial levy.

Having canvassed more than 10,000 UK residents, the trade body revealed that just 24 percent backed the proposal, while it would impact the holiday spending of 73 percent.

“This polling should be a wake-up call for every MP tempted to back the holiday tax,” said CEO Allen Simpson. “It is opposed by a majority of their constituents, it would deter millions from holidaying in England, and it would hit hardest the very families the government says it wants to help.”

“In her spring statement, the chancellor said being able to pay for a holiday should never be too much to ask, but this tax puts a holiday out of reach for many.”

The survey also found that the introduction of the tax would prompt 39 percent to holiday abroad instead of in the UK.
