The House of Commons has set a date to discuss high street gambling reform, with MPs due to debate licensing, planning and regulation processes on 8 January.
The request was put forward by Brent East MP Dawn Butler, a vocal opponent of the “proliferation” of AGCs, and will likely include proposals to overhaul the Aim to Permit.
So expect a very balanced debate full of extensively researched evidence and factual records – or not!
“On Thursday 8 January the House of Commons Chamber, MPs will hold a debate on high street gambling reform,” stated the Backbench Business Committee. “A full transcript of the debate will be available three hours after the debate in Commons Hansard.”
Though no details have been released about the debate, Aim to Permit is undoubtedly going to be in the mix. Butler was responsible for the question “will the Prime Minister join campaigners and help me to end ‘aim to permit, so that constituents such as his and mine can thrive?” during PMQs on 3 September.
“It is important that local authorities are given additional tools and powers to ensure vibrant high streets,” said Starmer in response. “We are looking, Mr Speaker, at introducing cumulative impact assessments.”
