Royal Amusements approved for AGC expansion

Royal Amusements has been granted permission by Bradford Council to enlarge its existing AGC on Bridge Street by expanding into an adjoining unit to the rear.

The proposal will see Royal Amusements “strengthen its presence” in the city centre, while revitalising the empty Market Street premises.

“The building is in the heart of Bradford’s newly-pedestrianised city centre, but has been vacant for several years,” reported the Telegraph and Argus. “The unit backs onto another gaming centre, Royal Bet, and if the plans are approved the wall dividing both units will be knocked down.”

“It would create a larger gaming centre, with entrances on both Market Street and Bridge Street.”

Planners had received a comment from conservation officer Jon Akroyd that “the removal of an original structural wall would result in a loss of fabric and would cause a degree of harm,” however the objection was dismissed.

Commenting on the application, the planning officers said “there is no objection in principle to this arrangement, which would consolidate the use into one operation, strengthening its presence without introducing a new or isolated use into the area.”

Despite the approval, the committee added that Listed Building Consent is required alongside planning permission, stating “the applicant must submit a separate application for Listed Building Consent prior to commencing any works.”
