Plans to build a £40m leisure resort at Loch Lomond have been rejected by the Scottish Government following concerns over environmental impact and flood risk.
The proposal by Flamingo Land included a water park, two hotels and more than 100 lodges along the loch’s shoreline. Although the Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park Authority rejected the plans in 2024, Flamingo Land successfully appealed before that ruling was overturned this week by Scottish Ministers.
Scottish Greens co-leader Ross Greer described the ruling as “a huge victory for the local community”, while developer Jim Paterson said he was “extremely disappointed”, calling the decision “bad news for Scottish business and tourism as a whole”.
“This proposal represented a transformational investment in Balloch and the wider area, delivering significant employment, regeneration and long-term economic benefits to one of Scotland’s most disadvantaged communities,” explained Paterson, concluding that the operator will now review the decision and consider its options.
