Showmen’s Guild progresses Living Heritage bid with DCMS

The Showmen’s Guild has advanced its bid to have funfairs and circuses recognised as part of the UK’s Intangible Cultural Heritage, following the official launch of the Government’s Living Heritage Inventory last month.

In close collaboration with the Association of Circus Proprietors, the Guild has also collected 10,000 signatures for a petition addressed to the House of Commons which backs the sector receiving UNESCO recognition.

“We are grateful to members and supporters of the twin associations’ joint petition,” said SGGB general secretary Joe Mercer.

“This achievement will assist our bid and subsequently that towards UNESCO full Intangible Cultural Heritage status; so as to push-back on the restrictions, red tape and obstructions that increasingly impede the twin, heritage-based, touring operations.”

As a result of their efforts, representatives of the SGGB and ACP were invited to the launch of the call for submissions for the UK Inventory of Living Heritage on 21 January, hosted by Baroness Twycross and Lord Parkinson.

“They were already aware of us and pleased to see us on arrival and to be reminded of the rich tapestry of Fairs and Circuses across the country, each with its own place in the local communities visited, and many with long and celebrated histories.”
