The rising costs of operating a hospitality venue could be the final nail in the coffin for the UK’s “lifeline” working men’s clubs, with community hubs such as the 107-year-old Bagworth and District Working Men’s Club in Leicestershire now “at a crossroads.”
Rising energy and operational costs could be the final nail in the coffin for the UK’s working men’s clubs, once a bastion of community cohesion and “lifeline” for members.
Venues such as the Bagworth and District Working Men’s Club in Leicestershire have seen their bills skyrocket in recent months, with committees now facing a difficult choice.
“Our electricity bills have almost tripled, and, as a non-profit community hub, every penny we have is currently going just to keep the lights on,” said vice-chair Craig Freeman. “We are at a crossroads: we either modernise, or we close our doors forever.”
“This club is a lifeline. It is a place where a ‘soft drink and a chat’ isn’t just a transaction – it’s a vital connection to the world. Even bingo is the only time some of our members get out of the house and interact with other people.”
Though Bagworth is one of a number of clubs across the country that has applied for help to meet costs, Freeman said “grant funding takes months to arrive, and funds are running low.”
The club has now launched a fundraiser via GoFundMe, entitled Save Our 1919 Legacy: Bagworth and District Club Survival Fund.
“For 107 years, we have been the heartbeat of the village – surviving wars, economic shifts, and a century of change. Today, we are facing our toughest challenge yet.”
“Please help us protect the 1919 legacy. Whether it’s the price of a pint or a larger gift, every pound ensures that Bagworth doesn’t lose its history or its home. Help us keep the lights on for another century.”
Hard work
