Worthing Pier to receive “permanent fix” for damaged section in 2026

Adur and Worthing Councils have confirmed the allocation of £900,000 to repair the damaged section of Worthing Pier next year, two years after the attraction was temporarily closed due to storm damage.

Adur and Worthing Councils have confirmed work on a “permanent fix” for the storm-damaged sections of Worthing Pier will begin next summer, with the authority earmarking £900,000 for the extensive renovation project.

The attraction was temporarily closed in October 2024, with businesses and concession holders given just 12 hours notice, however the pier was braced with a temporary support structure and reopened two months later.

“There was a huge outpouring of support from the community for our urgent work to reopen the pier last year but we were always clear that the steel support was only a temporary fix,” said council leader Sophie Cox.

“The permanent repair in 2026 will secure our fabulous pier for the years to come so that the tens of thousands of visitors who come to Worthing annually will be able to enjoy it. In the meantime we’re investing in our seafront and town centre to make the area more attractive to visitors and residents.”

The work will be carried out during summer and autumn next year, when the weather and tides are “generally easier to work in.”

“The hope is that by scheduling the repairs at that time of year, the work will be able to be completed more quickly and more cost effectively, with the pier able to remain open at the same time.”

Cox added that as design work continues for the permanent repair over the coming months, the council’s engineers and contractors will continue to carry out routine maintenance on the underside of the pier.
