Buzz Bingo’s chief product officer David Evans has reiterated how important a “stable and proportionate regulatory backdrop” is for the industry to thrive, telling media that proposed increases to MGD would have negative ramifications for the many social, employment and economic benefits the UK bingo sector provides.
As the government considers a rise in MGD, Buzz Bingo’s chief product officer has stressed how important a “stable and proportionate” tax backdrop is for the bingo industry, and the social, economic and employment benefits the sector provides.
Speaking to SBC News, David Evans highlighted how important machine income remains for land-based venues across the country, noting how increased tax obligations could negatively impact Buzz’s ability to invest.
“The economics of retail bingo are interconnected,” said Evans. “Machines form an important part of the overall club model and help support venues that provide entertainment, employment and genuine community value.”
“Significant increases in Machine Games Duty would put additional pressure on club economics and could constrain future investment.
“ The abolition of Bingo Duty was a welcome recognition of the social and cultural value of bingo. A stable and proportionate regulatory backdrop is needed for us to continue investing, support growth and keep our clubs thriving in local communities.”
Though Evans acknowledged that the industry “absolutely” should be challenged when it comes to player protection and maintaining high standards, the debate must recognise “the positive role that well-run, regulated venues can play in communities.”
“Our strategy remains focused on creating brilliant bingo-led venues, simplifying the customer experience and building a genuinely omni-channel business that connects our clubs and digital offering. That strategy gives the business greater resilience and positions us well as the regulatory backdrop evolves.”
“We want to keep investing – in our clubs, our technology, our colleagues and the customer experience. A stable and proportionate tax environment gives businesses the confidence to do exactly that.”
