David Lammy has agreed to meet with the MP for Eastbourne to discuss emergency measures to safeguard the future of the town’s pier, following the collapse of owner Lions Pier Ltd.
Josh Babarinde called on the deputy prime minister to support his Protect Our Pier campaign during PM’s Questions on 17 June, and received confirmation the government would engage with the MP’s efforts.
“Local residents have become concerned for the Pier’s future after a company linked to it has gone into liquidation and maintenance costs for piers across the country have gone sky high,” said Babarinde during the parliamentary session.
“Will the deputy prime minister back my ‘Protect Our Pier’ campaign and meet me to discuss emergency measures to safeguard our pier for the future?”
In response, Lammy described the pier as a “much-loved, iconic local landmark” and committed to meeting with Babarinde to discuss the issue.
