Four weeks left for industry to shape Commission red tape review

The gambling industry has four weeks remaining to submit proposals to the Gambling Commission on how regulatory requirements could be simplified and streamlined.

Operators, trade bodies and licensing authorities have until 25 September to respond to the regulator’s formal call for proposals, which opened on 26 June. The initiative is not a consultation, but instead gives industry stakeholders an opportunity to identify areas where the existing regulatory framework could operate more efficiently.

Proposals can address licence conditions, technical standards, reporting requirements and how different regulatory rules interact in practice. However, the Commission has excluded areas currently subject to consultation and recently introduced measures stemming from the 2023 Gambling Act Review White Paper which have yet to be fully evaluated.

The initiative was launched by the nearly and not so dearly departed executive director for research and policy Tim Miller, who will leave the regulator this month after ten years. OLBG content manager David Coleman said the remaining opportunity was “worth taking seriously”.

“What I want to see is whether genuine process improvements come out of it, things like clearer reporting or less duplication, rather than the call quietly landing on a shelf once Tim Miller’s gone,” he added.

Industry submissions must be made by 25 September.
