It’s becoming a familiar story around the UK’s seaside resorts – the existential threat to heritage landmark attractions. Teignmouth Pier is the latest to raise concerns as protection measures are out of reach until at least 2028 as funds remain tight at the local council.
The Environment Agency has warned that the future of Teignmouth Pier could be in doubt, with funding for essential works to shore up the dilapidated attraction unlikely to be secured before 2028/2029.
According to the EA, erosion of the beach has accelerated over the past few years, exposing the pier’s structural piles and destroying its seaward end, prompting concerns Teignbridge District Council could be forced to cordon off the beach for public safety.
“Teignmouth seafront is an important local landmark,” stated the EA. “This work is ongoing, but the funding needed to develop the project further is not currently available.”
The agency said it is working with the local authority on a business case to secure government funding for the work, as the scale of investment required is beyond the council’s budgetary contingency.
“The works required have been informed by structural investigations and the recently completed Teignmouth and Shaldon Beach Management Plan.”
“We will continue to work closely with Teignbridge Council, Teignmouth Harbour Commission and the Teign Estuary and Coastal Partnership, and will communicate more widely as the project progresses.”
The EA said a decision on funding won’t take place until at least 2028, but if approved the works to secure the pier could be completed by 2030.
