Mecca Bingo celebrates 65 years in Britain

Mecca Bingo is celebrating its 65th anniversary, marking more than six decades as one of the most recognisable names in Britain’s bingo industry.

Founded in 1961, Mecca’s emergence coincided with the legalisation and rapid expansion of commercial bingo following the Betting and Gaming Act 1960. By June that year, Mecca was reportedly selling 500,000 bingo books each week, helping establish the game as a major form of mass-market entertainment.

Reflecting on the milestone, Mecca said: “We’re celebrating 65 years of bringing people together, supporting communities, and creating winning memories.”

The operator added that it was “so proud of our history – and equally as excited about what comes next”, highlighting its evolution from the “Swinging Sixties” to the modern day.

Now owned by Rank Group, Mecca operates 41 venues across the UK, following the closure of nine clubs during 2025/26. Rank has described the smaller estate as comprising core clubs and flagship venues better positioned to compete in their local markets.

The business has also increasingly embraced electronic bingo, with tablet players now accounting for 80 percent of mainstage bingo spend.

Marking its anniversary, Mecca thanked those involved in its six-decade journey, adding: “To everyone who’s been part of the Mecca journey so far, a huge thank you.”
