MERKUR social purpose programme funds UK reforestation and biodiversity initiatives

The commercial world has a responsibility to help protect the environment and MERKUR UK continues to support a range of initiatives that have a sharp focus on UK-based climate and biodiversity restoration projects thanks to funds provided via its Community social purpose programme.

MERKUR UK is continuing its support of Ecologi, the UK’s most trusted B Corp-certified climate action platform. The organisation, whose mission is to inspire and empower businesses to accelerate global climate action, partners with 16,000 SMEs, large corporates and enterprise organisations.

Through its Community social purpose programme MERKUR UK is supporting the Ecologi UK Climate and Nature Fund, a pooled environmental programme that enables businesses to support a mix of UK-based climate and biodiversity restoration projects through a single contribution.

The UK has lost more than half of its biodiversity since the Industrial Revolution with 1 in 6 species now at risk of extinction. The fund contributes to a range of ecosystems that need protecting and restoring on land and around the UK coastline. Programmes include reforestation and native tree planting, wildflower, wetland, and wildlife habitat restoration as well as UK seagrass research and restoration. Projects are intended to increase biodiversity, improve carbon sequestration and environmental resilience to flooding and erosion.

MERKUR Community is also supporting Ecologi’s UK tree planting and reforestation programme which focuses on planting native tree species across England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland in partnership with environmental charities, landowners, and local communities.

Native species such as oak, birch, alder, willow, rowan, hawthorn, and Scots pine are commonly planted providing robust habitats for birds, insects, and mammals while also improving soil quality and water retention. Ecologi operates what it describes as a ‘right trees in the right places’ programme ensuring that planting schemes complement local ecosystems and avoid environmentally sensitive habitats.

Explaining MERKUR UK’s support for Ecologi, Director of Public and Political Relations Tony Boulton said: “The environment is of great importance to the entire MERKUR family and the company has a fantastic record of supporting positive environment friendly initiatives. Beyond carbon sequestration, the projects that we are supporting via the Ecologi UK Climate and Nature Fund contribute to flood resilience, cleaner air and water, improved public green spaces, and the recovery of native wildlife across the UK.”

The MERKUR Community and Initiative programmes were established to provide essential support for smaller charities and good causes. Working in partnership with its high street customers, during 2025 the programmes provided over £200,000 of support to 150 organisations including foodbanks, community kitchens, dance groups and powerchair football clubs.
